Join Syann van Niftrik for a one-day chain making workshop.

Make a silver chain bracelet or necklace that incorporates movement through articulation. At the end of the day you will have a beautiful, unique piece of jewellery, new skills and the confidence to explore further jewellery making techniques.

In my experience, hands on making develops an understanding of the practical issues involved in creativity. The skills used in making chain, can be quickly mastered and can easily be adapted to exploit a wide range of creative endeavours.

On this course, you will learn about the character of different metals, how to anneal wire, shape and cut links in various sizes. You will cover a variety of soldering techniques using palions or paste using easy, hard or medium solder and you will learn when is the most appropriate time to use each. The first step will be to look at the design possibilities of working with simple links, there are many and you may want to research some ideas before coming.

Various chain patterns will be discussed, how they are made and how they relate to each other. You can choose from loop-in-loop or curb chain and try some ideas in copper wire before working in silver. You will also be taught to make simple hook clasps

You can expect to come away from the course having sampled various techniques, made a piece of jewellery, and have the confidence to further explore the subject.

Please wear comfortable clothes and an apron. Have a note book to make notes and sketch ideas. You will be given a list of suppliers of tools and materials.

All materials except the silver used in your final piece, will be included in the price.

Completed Items will be charged at cost price; a bracelet weighing 18grams is £22 and a necklace at 30 grams, £36.
