Welcome to our annual exhibition that celebrates the unique quality and craftsmanship of our Maker Members. It all began back in 1955 when a group of local makers worked together and organised a joint exhibition of their work, which has inspired others ever since.

The Summer Show is open to all Full Maker Members of MAKE Southwest. The pieces are chosen by the Selection Committee (a group of Maker Member representatives from a range of craft disciplines and an independent panellist), alongside MAKE Southwest exhibition staff.

President’s Prize

Chosen by Peter Randall-Page,
President of MAKE Southwest

Luke’s winning piece, titled ‘Crucible’, was conceived during lockdown. The rough exterior represents the chaos of society under the pandemic. On the other hand, the cool symmetrical line of the form connotes balance and the return of a natural order.

As ever, choosing one winner from such a variety of high quality work is agonising,” said Peter Randall-Page RA. “In the end my choice can only be personal and idiosyncratic, and many of the other pieces are equally deserving of a prize.”

“I was immediately drawn to Luke Shepherd’s Crucible. I like its boldness, the thickness of its walls, the simple spout and it’s slightly wonky symmetry. For me it has a memorable sculptural presence.”

Selection Committee Award for Excellence

Chosen by the Selection Committee

Angie is a Bristol based rug weaver who occasionally indulges her passion for intricate handwoven artworks.

The Selection Committee was impressed with Angie’s highly skilled craftsmanship and the richness of her colour palette.

Angie’s Summer Show pieces, a framed panel and four cushions, are from her Warped series, which comprises handwoven textile artworks designed to mesmerise.

“These are a present to myself and working on a fine scale allows me to see new designs for my rugs,” says Angie.

“There is a playful element to them. The artworks inform the rug weaving and vice versa, creating a new energy in my weaving that means I never lose the enjoyment of practising my craft.”
