CRAFT Festival 2024: Bovey Tracey
the 20 year anniversary!
Mill Marsh Park, Bovey Tracey
7 - 9 June 2024
Our friends, the Craft Festival, are back in Bovey Tracey Friday 7th - Sunday 9th June 2024.
Alongside over 200 Exhibitors, there are many exciting things taking place over the weekend:
MAKE Southwest at the CRAFT Festival!
Stand MM23
We are happy to announce that we will have a designated tent, as per usual, at the CRAFT Festival. This year our tent will hold 3 demos per day . See the maker demo schedule below.
Don’t forget to pop over to our Riverside Mill (directly opposite the entrance to Mill Marsh Park), over the weekend too as we will have 3 amazing craft exhibitions and lots of beautiful items for sale. For the CRAFT Festival weekend we will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am - 5pm.
RODNEY’S Cafe at MAKE Southwest, located on our first floor, will be open all weekend too - a perfect place to relax and refuel if the hustle and bustle of the Craft Festival gets too much. All homemade onsite using locally sourced ingredients, RODNEY’S has a range of cakes, light bites, lunches and beverages to choose from. It is very dog-friendly and has a lovely, sunny rooftop terrace.
20 Years in the Making Exhibition
Jubilee Gallery at MAKE Southwest, 27 April - 22 June
As part of the Craft Festival’s 20-year celebration, we are showing a curated group show selected by Sarah James MBE and the MAKE Southwest exhibitions team. We have selected 21 makers from across the UK; previous prize winners from the last 20 years of the Craft Festival who we feel represent different aspects of the history and current landscape of this high point in the creative calendar. Expect collectable work by some of the biggest stars of the contemporary craft world!
Friday 7th June
Nix Hawkins | Ceramics
MAKE Southwest Maker Member
Working from her Dorset studio, Nix hand throws on her wheel in a natural stoneware. With a design ethos to create pieces that sit comfortably in the hand and home, her ceramics combine simple curves and forms, hand carved tactile texture and depth, and interest from glazes and traditional firing techniques.
Jane Deane | Textiles
MAKE Southwest Maker Member
Jane is a natural dyer, who also hand spins and weaves using mainly natural fibres, with environmental concerns being a priority for her. She has been practicing for 40 years and during that time has taught her skills internationally and throughout the UK.
Expanded Skies | Jewellery
Pledged Green Maker
Under the name Expanded Skies, Emma Whittaker handcrafts jewellery, precious objects, and silver display stands. Her designs are a celebration of the water, land, and skies of Dartmoor. Emma uses recycled silver and gold, ethically sourced gemstones and crystals, and sustainable, eco-friendly processes.
Saturday 8th June
Val Muddyman | Jewellery
MAKE Southwest Maker Member
Val Muddyman has created a range of jewellery which brings to life the tangles of seaweed found at the high tide mark. She collects the seaweed from the beaches just yards from her studio in Royal William Yard in Plymouth, choosing interesting shapes and configurations of Bladderwrack and other varieties that may have been washed up into the area.
Ann Bruford | Jewellery
Andrew Spilsbury | Wood
Pledged Green Maker & MAKE Southwest Maker Member
Andrew makes ‘Shaker style’ wooden boxes and other items, drawing on the traditions of simple elegant design combined with usefulness of purpose. His boxes are crafted primarily from thin strips or veneers of cherry and maple woods in laminated and solid wood forms and fastened with copper tacks and rivets.
Sunday 9th June
Ania Wawrzkowicz | Jewellery
MAKE Southwest Maker Member
Ania’s jewellery comes from her observations of the natural world, from the largest expanses down to the smallest particle. Her work is sculptural, given depth by subtle characteristics such as detailed surface textures, intricate shapes or uneven sculptural qualities. Trained in fine art, her practice is informed by contemporary art as well as the surrounding landscape.
Jill Fanshawe Kato | Ceramics
MAKE Southwest Maker Member
For Jill, working in clay is a kind of alchemy, and she chooses the unpredictable results of fuel burning kilns. Mostly, she hand builds one-off pieces and adds imagery with coloured slips and glaze, fired to 1270°C. She is drawn to the technical and artistic challenge of large pieces and sculptures for wall and gardens.
Glass Shed Studio | Textiles
Pledged Green Maker
Gabriela and Alison are the co-founders of Glass Shed Studio, a small business committed to sustainability. They use only repurposed fabrics and turn them into functional bags and clothing, incorporating original details as design features.
