About Emma Whittaker:
Emma makes miniature, wearable sculptures that tell a story. Jewellery that connects the wearer to their special places, the skies, land, water, birds, animals, rocks and plants. Specific features of the Dartmoor landscape, cartography, archaeology and ancient symbols are depicted in hand engraving, inlaid with gold wires and set with gemstones.
Traditional metalsmithing methods are used to form precious metals and set stones. She handcrafts hinges, catches, creates filigree from fine wires and sculpts elements in clay that are hand cast.
Sustainable and ethical approaches are at the centre of her practice. She set up the Green Maker Initiative with MAKE Southwest and actively researches and promotes sustainable craft. She works with recycled silver and gold, fully traceable, ethical gemstones, ‘non-mined’ geologist finds, and quartz from her garden.
Emma has been teaching and researching in universities since 2000. With a background in fine art and experience design, she developed a site-specific narrative practice, exhibiting internationally. Retraining in the miniature world of fine jewellery, she runs her jewellery business, Expanded Skies.

Create a beautiful silver pendant with 24ct gold accents, inspired by the butterflies and bees of Dartmoor.
Learn the Korean gold gilding technique of Keum Boo, and learn, or develop your skills, in saw piercing, forming, filing, soldering and polishing.
Suitable for complete beginners and immediate level. You will take home a unique beautiful pendant with a complementary silver chain.
This workshop is open to adults & teenagers aged 13 years +
Teenage ticket holders must be accompanied by an additional parent ticket holder for the workshop duration.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included and will be available on the day. There will be a short lunch break during the workshop and participants are welcome to bring a packed lunch. Our Café is also open should you wish to purchase other refreshments during the workshop - all participants receive a 10% discount voucher for food and drink purchased on the day. This discount voucher can also be used for purchases in our retail galleries and exhibitions.
On arrival, please make your way to the side gate of the Riverside Mill, through the courtyard and up the stone stairs on the side of the building. Please let us know if you require the lift.
