What is the Green Maker Initiative?

Working with the EDRF funded Low Carbon Devon project at University of Plymouth, MAKE Southwest (formerly Devon Guild of Craftsmen) have launched an exciting new Green Maker Initiative. We are asking makers to sign a pledge to improve their environmental actions over time through a series of simple commitments. This will support them in reducing their environmental impact each year.

What you get:

  • Sustainable makers will be listed on MAKE Southwest website and display GMI membership credentials on their own publicity

  • Sustainable maker resources with links to 'carbon footprint measurement for makers'

  • Help for makers to reduce their environmental impact by providing workshops, support and networks

  • Access to a recycle and share, waste materials bank which makers can collect from or donate to

  • Quarterly email newsletter

  • A button made from fully recycled materials (coming end November)

  • Priority access to sell at our Green Maker Events

What we ask of you:

  • Sign the pledge below to actively reduce the environmental impact of your making practice

  • Complete a yearly informal report about their actions relating to the environment (template will be provided)

  • And that’s it…!

The Green Maker Initiative Map!

Back in February, over 50 pledged Green Makers took part in the Green Maker Initiative micro survey about how you are reducing the environmental impact of your practice. The results were fascinating, revealing a large and small actions across the disciplines of ceramics, jewellery, bookbinding/paper, wood, printmaking, textiles, glass, leather, and mixed media. Low Carbon Devon collated these results and plotted you and your responses on a giant map in the MAKE Southwest gallery during February and March. During the exhibition an additional 15 or so GMI members also hand wrote tags and put themselves on the map.

Low Carbon Devon have since digitised the map and more makers continue to be added to it as they submit their details.

If you would like to to submit your details for inclusion on the map, please visit HERE.

This initiative was one of the collaborative Creative Industry outcomes from the University of Plymouth’s Low Carbon Devon project supported by an investment from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The three-year £2.6 million programme provided an exciting new catalyst for low-carbon economic growth in Devon. Dr Emma Whittaker, Research Fellow, supported by EDRF Co-Investigator Associate Professor Polly Macpherson drew upon the University’s broad spectrum of research expertise to facilitate and advocate the global shift to low carbon within Devon based Creative Industries and asked what are the narratives of low carbon and how can we take action for positive change?
