Sarah Protherough

Sarah Protherough | Wood | Cornwall

Sarah Protherough is a Cornwall-based woodcarver specialising in relief carving and sculptural work. Trained in traditional woodcarving and gilding at the City & Guilds of London Art School, she works primarily using hand tools and time-honoured techniques.

With a practice developed through over a decade of public, heritage and private commissions, Sarah is particularly drawn to relief carving and the way carved surfaces can hold narrative and meaning.

Living and working by the sea, she is inspired by the landscapes, legends and memories that shape our sense of place. Each piece holds its own story - sometimes ancient, sometimes deeply personal - always guided by a connection to the natural world.

Working with locally sourced and reclaimed timber, she pays close attention to grain, proportion and surface, finishing each piece by hand to reveal the character of the wood. Sarah’s work reflects a strong grounding in traditional craft skills, combined with an ongoing exploration of carved form and material.
