Jane Witheridge
Jane Witheridge | Textiles - Batik | Devon
Jane makes beautiful hand-painted textiles using the age-old techniques of batik and silk painting. The rigour of both these disciplines, demanding as they do, a lot of time, means that Jane's silks are usually sold framed, or wall mounted, as pictures.
Jane does make lengths of fabric though, from time to time, and these are used for one-off garments or interiors.
Jane has been in practice since 1985 and has been a full member of MAKE Southwest (formerly Devon Guild of Craftsmen) since 1990. Her early work was sold at Liberty, Regent Street, London, and for many years Jane has exhibited in galleries throughout the UK and overseas, favouring galleries and shows in Devon, where she was born.
Between 2000 and 2006 Jane focused on large-scale projects and was commissioned to create hangings, panels or pictures, often on a monumental scale, for many public and private spaces, working with many high -profile partners, including; UNESCO, The National Trust, EDF, Exeter Cathedral, Compton Castle, Hospital Trusts in Plymouth, Torbay and Exeter, The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Devon County Council and many more.
Since 2006 Jane has been concentrating on her studio practice, studying classical drawing and continuing to develop her silk painting work.
