Join MAKE Southwest Maker Member and printmaker Steve Manning for a two-day reduction linocut course with a focus on clouds and skyscapes!

This workshop will offer participants the opportunity to explore the challenging technique of reduction lino printing through the creation of cloudscapes and skyscapes.

On day one participants will begin by using pre prepared templates to guide them through the reduction print process.

On day two participants will move on to create their own skyscape using photographs, sketches or preparatory drawings.

At the end of the course participants will understand how:

  • to use lino gouge

  • to use a printmaking press

  • to cut a design from a lino block

  • the reduction print process works

  • to overlay inks

  • to effectively roll ink onto a block

  • to register an image to paper using Ternes Burton registration method

  • to apply the image to paper using a press and/or hand burnishing

This course is open to all abilities and no previous experience of printmaking is necessary.

All equipment and materials will be provided for both days - though we encourage participants to bring their own photographs, sketches, drawings etc. for day two.

Participants must be aged 16 years + to attend this course.

About the tutor

I am an Exeter based printmaker inspired by the big skies, wetlands and moors of the South West. My work endeavours to represent these ephemeral landscapes using a medium usually associated with bold blocks of colour. I use reduction printing, mono print techniques and various methods of ink thinning to achieve a lightness of touch often described as ‘painterly’.

The creation of my prints is a painstaking exercise using a medium not entirely suited to rendering the fleeting nature of my chosen subject matter! I should be a watercolourist but I love the combination of craft and fine art printmaking offers.
