A talk by photographer Marianthi Lainas with Q+A.

Having spent most of her life living a stone’s throw from the coast, Responding to Light exhibitor Marianthi’s work is inspired by the transient beauty of the littoral landscape. At the dynamic edges of the land, the shore is in a constant state of flux. Temporary lines and textures are formed by wave and wind, the landscape reshaped twice daily.

For over 15 years Marianthi used digital camera equipment to interpret these cycles of ebb and flow, but now works in a more ‘hands-on’ way. Setting aside her camera, she now uses lensless tech-niques, specifically cyanotype, working out at the tideline and exposing light sensitive papers to the dynamic elements of seawater, sand and sunlight.

Marianthi will talk about how she uses this process and how, in spite of the limitations of the medium, it has offered much creative freedom and inspiration. This more tactile approach has also extended to how Marianthi presents her work. She has spent some considerable time learning the art of bookbinding and embracing handmade photo-books as an alternative way.

This event is part of a programme of talks and workshops around the exhibition Responding to Light: the diversity of modern photography, at MAKE Southwest, 16 September - 4 November 2023.

The exhibition will showcase some of the huge range of techniques, subjects, and skills associated with contemporary British photography, including digital and analogue technologies, in large and small scales, 2D and 3D forms.

There is an extensive programme of events around this exhibition, including talks and masterclasses with most of the exhibitors. Please see our other events.

Please note, we have a specific cancellation policy for all events associated with this exhibition due to the distances speakers will be travelling. View cancellation policy HERE.
