About makerslane.uk

I think of myself as a maker rather than an artist, although most of my projects start with a drawing, a skill that I value highly. I have explored lots of different ways of printing over nearly twenty years, such as collagraphs, monoprints and drypoints, while being a member of a printing group, but my love of lino started way back in my O level Art room. When I gave up my day job, I wanted to explore mixing textiles and linocut printing to make useful objects for people to treasure.

I have always had a weakness for beautiful fabrics and particularly enjoy working with linens, silks, wool and velvets. Finding remnants, end of rolls or upcycling pieces gives me particular pleasure as I am conscious that as a maker I am contributing to the number of things in the world. Minimum waste is also a focus with every scrap used or repurposed. My patterns also maximize the fabric used. Printing on these fabrics gives different effects, which adds another dimension to printmaking, but one that can bring interest and variety. Free motion embroidery and applique are other techniques I like to use to create more texture and colour in my projects. With both printmaking and free motion embroidery your work responds to the materials you are using, changing the results and evolving your original idea. There are endless possibilities, and each piece is unique.

My works and makes are mostly inspired by nature, the countryside and the ancient lanes and I hope they will evoke memories of Devon.
