Susan Kinley | Mixed Media | Cornwall

Susan Kinley makes wall pieces and installations that respond to particular places in remote and wild locations. Her starting points are often archaeological sites at the coastal boundaries of the UK, and works in glass, enamels and Japanese papers mirror both the wider landscape and small, close up details, with changes of perspective and viewpoints.

Her work is often influenced by the Bronze Age landscape of West Penwith and the Isles of Scilly. In recent smaller kilnfired works waterjet cut glass is layered with fragments of photographic imagery and glass powders to form micro landscapes that interact with light. Susan continues to explore new material combinations, and is currently evolving new works in glass, enamels and copper.

She enjoys changes of scale, and has worked on many commissions for private and public spaces, including Penlee House Art Gallery & Museum, Penzance, and the British Embassy in Dublin. Awards have included project and research grants from Arts Council England, The Crafts Council, Anglo Diawa, David Cantor Memorial award, and Marshwood Arts Award in Applied Arts. In 2019 she was selected by the Crafts Council to exhibit a large scale glass wall installation, West South West, in Collect Open at Saatchi Gallery.
