Charlotte Gustar is a contemporary jeweller and silversmith based in Torquay, Devon, working under the name BellEve Jewellery. She creates ocean-inspired jewellery influenced by beachcombing, year-round sea swimming and the colours and textures of the South Devon coastline.
Her journey began by making simple sea-glass rings for herself and has grown into a practice combining recycled sterling and fine silver with sea glass, vitreous enamel, freshwater pearls, gemstones and copper details. Her background in archaeology inspires the sense of lost, sea-worn treasure found throughout her work.
Charlotte uses traditional silversmithing techniques and hand-operated tools to form, pierce, solder, texture and finish each piece. She also uses historic heritage dies with a manually operated press to create shell and marine forms, adding individually fabricated barnacles and other coastal details.
Her recent Rockpool Collection uses hand-torched vitreous enamel to capture the colour and miniature habitats of the shoreline. Sustainability is central to her practice, from recycled silver and carefully sourced materials to local suppliers and environmentally conscious packaging.
