Nix Hawkins

Nix Hawkins | Ceramics | Dorset

Working from her Dorset studio, Nix hand throws on her wheel in a natural stoneware.

With a design ethos to create pieces to sit comfortably in the hand and home, her ceramics combine simple curves and forms, hand carved tactile texture and depth and interest from glazes and traditional firing techniques.

Using the natural features of the material and a soft earthy colour palette, Nix’s pieces are individual and distinct often showing show the subtle marks of her hands.

Some of her work is reduction fired in a wood fuel kiln, a traditional process that is now only used by a few potters. It’s a labour of love as each firing can takes days, yet whilst its fraught with uncertainty, the beautiful unique pots that emerge are worth the effort.

For Nix, there is something quite amazing about using our hands, a few simple tools and heat to transform a humble lump of mud into a beautiful yet functional object that will last for years.

Most of all, she loves making things that have purpose, that can be used and enrich the everyday.
