Malcolm Law | Ceramics | Devon

Malcolm lives and works in the West Country in his studio which has an inspiring view of Lyme Bay.

Originally, Malcolm worked as a graphic designer and lecturer. He began exploring ceramics as a medium for three-dimensional illustration towards the end of the last century.

He produces original ceramic sculpture including themes of Neptune, Britannia, Wellington, Nelson and other figures from mythology, history, politics and themes of the Sea. The work is highly detailed, often humorous with the subject in anachronistic and nautical situations.

All the larger ceramics are ‘one-off’ – but successful themes are revisited with the same players and developed in fresh directions. He undertakes personal commissions.

Malcolm works with robust clays: T Material, which is particularly suitable for intricate work, and occasionally Crank. His work is mainly hand built using slab and modelling techniques.

He biscuit fires to 1000°C. He uses underglaze to colour the white body and then fires to 1240°C. He applies gold and platinum lustres to pick out points of detail and then the piece is fired for a third time to 740°C.
