Shelagh Brown

Shelagh Brown | Textiles | Devon

Wearable art, one of a kind.

Shelagh's ‘paints’ are her handspun dyed and undyed, rarebreed and British lambswool, silks and sustainable natural fibres. Wild Dartmoor colours, textures, landscapes, sea and sunsets.

Slow fashion, contemporary artisan home textiles, entirely handmade using spinning wheels, knitting needles and weaving looms.

Handspun handknitted sweaters, hats, knitting wools. Handwoven scarves, throws, cushions, accessories. Prices: £25 to £380.

Self-taught and influenced by talented tutors UK and abroad, Shelagh owned a Gallery in Zambia.

Provenance is key. British, rarebreed lambswool and sustainable natural fibres are sourced locally if possible. Washed, processed, carded, dyed, blended and handspun in her Princetown studio. End-of-line lambswool from traditional British wool mills. No waste.

Britain’s historical wealth, wool is warm, cool, sustainable, fire-resistant, biodegradable, circular as replenishes the soil. Sixty-four British wool breeds ideal for fine knitwear, cloth, carpets, insulation or mulch. Synthetics are quickly discarded into landfill, farmers cannot sell fleeces. A growing number of informed consumers, conservation farmers and designer-makers celebrate British and heritage wools.
