Liz Clay
Liz Clay | Textiles - Felt | Somerset
From her studio in Westbury-sub-Mendip, Somerset, Liz creates hand felted textiles for haute couture and one off pieces to commission.
Liz studied textiles at Bath School of Art and Design in the late 90s. Since then her professional career has focused entirely on felt making process and material research of wool, specifically working within haute couture and innovating felt making techniques.
Her PhD investigates the creative potential of British 'waste’ wool for fine craft felt making.
Liz’s influences are as diverse as the work she produces: experimental in her approach whilst nudging the boundaries of an ancient craft towards new and unexpected directions in contemporary practice.
British wool plays a significant role in her designs. Liz states “working these wools during the felt process is seductive: it's a slow and painstaking process for a high end result. The aim is to surprise and delight”.
Author of Nuno Felt, Liz teaches internationally and exhibits regularly in Britain, Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. Work is held in the collections of Givenchy, Balenciaga, Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney.
