My aim was to celebrate the joy of seeing the first daffodils of the year blooming in the garden, marking the beginning of spring after the general gloom of January and February. I took a bunch into my workshop and carved the clay flowers directly from observation.

Once bisque fired I made ceramic moulds from them. I have made all the pieces from white earthenware clay and blended the glazes to try and replicate the natural colours. The traditional pattern on the ginger jar vase was painted on with a bright blue underglaze, to contrast with the rich yellow tones of the flowers. The subject is a very simple one, but the method has been complex.
