Water Fragment necklace

NFS

Black patinated sterling silver pendant, textured cast glass and 23.75ct gold leaf

Water has no one state, constantly shape shifting and refracting light, and I have created a simple circle pendant to contain a disc of sunlight as seen through flowing water, represented by a unique piece of cast glass.  When worn, the quality of light striking the glass varies and with that the gold beneath changes from pale silver to glowing yellow.

Working in glass is a new medium for me and my aim is to create my own ‘stones’ to use in my jewellery pieces, as commercially available stones come in standard shapes and can only add colour or light but no character or meaning to a design.  Designing to cast in metal is something I know well but preparing small, unique moulds for kiln casting and then using cold glass finishing are both skills that I hope to find time and finances to explore further.

Materials and process

Black patinated sterling silver pendant on a heavy belcher chain with handmade hook catch and finial (hallmarked). The pendant holds a disc of clear, textured cast glass through which can be seen a 23.75ct gold leaf surface.

Metal - piercing, soldering, engraving (surface texture), patination, gilding.
Glass - handmade master, mould making, cold glass working.
