Set of 3 Shaker style 'crown' boxes

£220

Laminated cherry veneers and maple band.

This set of Shaker Boxes is unusual in their being both round and open. They are based upon boxes originally made by the Shaker communities for use as spittoons.  A rim was added to give additional strength and has been made in contrasting wood for decorative effect. The boxes have been named by American Master Boxmaker, John Wilson, as crown boxes; the decorative brass escutcheon pins holding the rim in place look crown-like.

Today these boxes are intended for use as tableware for serving bread etc.

Steam bent and fastened using shaker inspired swallowtail joints and copper tacks and escutcheon pins. The base is attached using wooden pegs. Finished with hard wax oil and wax.
