Learn All About Free-Machine Embroidery

Workshop with SarahB

Friday 5 July 2024, 10.30am - 4.30pm

£80

Venue: MAKE Southwest

Suitable for: Adults

Level: Beginners and Intermediate

Join MAKE Southwest member SarahB to learn free-machine embroidery on MAKE Southwest’s new Janome sewing machines.

You will learn how to transform the machine into a drawing tool that’ll give you the freedom to make lines, marks and textures in an expressive way.

At the start of the workshop you’ll be shown a variety of samples of stitching styles and effects. During the day you’ll be given the opportunity to experiment with alternative types of sewing thread, machine needles, stitch tension, fabric types (including transfer-adhesive & wash away fabric) and appliqué. Sarah isn’t able to reveal the technique of her stitched shadow art but will introduce you to the fundamentals of her method. Free machine embroidery aka. ‘free motion embroidery’ or ‘free machining’ is a delightful stitching method that usually has people converted instantly.

Participants mustn’t doubt their drawing ability as the unique qualities inherent in this sewing method always make for successful results.

Should you have specific ideas for a project be sure to bring them with you along with any fabrics, threads and sewing equipment (like sharp scissors) that you may particularly want to use.

This workshop is open to beginners and intermediate level abilities.

All tools and materials (including sewing machines) will be provided.
