Maker Showcase
Ceramics.
The tactile qualities of Bristol-based Alex’s ceramics are inspired by textures that surround us such as tree bark, natural rocks, cracking paint and even marine life. The thrown vessel is used as a canvas to investigate the properties of these surfaces. Metal oxides add depth whilst the gold, platinum and copper lustre adds a sense of opulence.
About the exhibitor
Alex McCarthy | Ceramics | Bristol
My career began in Devon, however for the past nine years, I have lived in Bristol, where I create objects that harmoniously connect surface and form. and my pieces draw formal inspiration from simple ceramic profiles, with their highly textured surfaces reflecting my fascination with touch.
The tactile qualities of my artefacts are inspired by the textures that surround us, such as tree bark, natural rocks, cracking paint, and marine life. I use the thrown vessel as a canvas to explore these surface properties. Metal oxides add depth, while gold, platinum, and copper lustre impart a sense of opulence.
Each piece is intentionally unique, as I believe every piece has its own story to tell. I encourage viewers to interact with the work through touch, perhaps feeling the journey of the pot. Each item undergoes multiple firings at different temperatures, allowing me to add more oxide or lustre with each re-firing.
As a ceramicist, I am excited by the range of textural qualities that can be achieved with different clays and materials sourced from the earth. I continually explore various techniques to create these unique surfaces, keeping my interest ever renewed.
