Helen Edwards
Helen Edwards | Mixed Media | Devon
Helen is a textile artist working from her studio in Chudleigh, South Devon.
Influenced by her Belgian mother and grandmother who were always busy “making and creating”, Helen mastered textile skills from an early age.
Following a 21 year career as a Speech and Language Therapist working for the NHS, Helen retrained in Integrated Craft (2006 - 2009).
This training enabled her to amalgamate her skills in art and design, photography, ceramics, metals and textiles.
Using textile techniques, Helen works with different materials such as paper, ceramic, natural fibres and metals to construct both functional pieces or more unusual exhibition pieces.
Helen’s recent work “handwoven / stitch / pewter” allows her to combine her passion for hand weaving with her love of stitching and working with her favourite metal; pewter.
Materials are carefully chosen for their visual and tactile properties. Helen often chooses natural fibres in her weaving, occasionally creating the yarn herself by spinning and hand-dyeing.
All the work made, whether functional or exhibition , is designed and constructed entirely by Helen. Pieces can take a long time to complete and each one is completely unique.
