Through the process of screen print Emma Studd explores colour and pattern in geometric forms. She intuitively uses the screen as a tool to create the sense of illusion. Her recent collaboration with Dina Locker has developed a third dimension to her work, evoking a sense of both physical and implied depth.

The genesis of this collaborative mission was borne out of Dina Locker’s desire to bring colour and pattern into her work and Emma’s aspiration to generate form from surface pattern. They both share a love of geometry and repeated pattern and are keen to develop the work further. The possible outcomes to this process appear limitless and although most parts are controlled, others are left to happen, making the systematic way of working more exciting.

This new work by Locker & Studd was forged using one of Dina’s crease patterns she uses to fold her handmade lampshades. Four separate positives were then developed onto screens. Each layer is hand printed by Emma using a specific colour palette to create a range of multiple patterns. The finished screen-printed designs are then analysed to establish an optimal process to fold the paper in order to create depth and a sense of dynamism within the piece. Dina then folds and manipulates the hand printed-paper to create a multi faceted circular relief, a unique work of Art. They are then mounted and box framed with anti-reflective and UV protection glass to enable the suggestion of possible tactile perception, whilst still preserving and protecting the work.
