Hilda Allen, Honest Weaves

Hilda is a self-taught weaver. She is a qualified interior and graphic designer and worked in the creative industry for over 12 years. Working on events and websites, she became more unhappy with producing work to add to a throw away culture. Weaving enables Hilda to get some head space but it also feels like a primal practice to her, where her heart and hands are able to work together.

Hilda is conscious of using ethically sourced materials and where possible collaborating with other makers. This year she has been able to work with The Liverpool Weaving Company on a small batch of throws.

Hilda’s wall hangings are created with a mix of banner designs and the natural world. Our home is a part of us, it’s our safe place, it’s our heritage.

During the pandemic people have been bringing more textiles and banners into their homes creating a powerful statement. It is a reflection of us, what we hold dear. This can be done through the intricate designs, materials used and colour palette. Weaving with a mixture of UK sourced vintage threads and recycled cotton, and wool from Manos del Uruguay. Manos is a non-profit organisation that supports local women to make a living while remaining in their local village and raising their families. The wooden hanger is then made by a UK carpenter using sustainable timber.
