Lewis Brown
Lewis Brown is a London-based artist and architect whose practice investigates the convergence of digital tools and performative art. Working across sculpture, drawing, and photography, Brown employs machines as vehicles to explore natural and physical phenomena through the controlled choreography of light, matter, and time. He views the machine not as a passive tool but as a creative partner, defining a new form of digital craftsmanship.
For KINETIC, Brown presents two new works that examine our perception – or lack thereof – of technology.
‘Drawing Machine Framework II’ functions as a collaborative instrument. Utilising integrated sensors, the machine responds to the presence and movement of gallery visitors, accelerating or distorting its path in real-time. The resulting drawings constitute a permanent physical record of the exhibition's activity, each unique piece signed by the machine.
In contrast, ‘Latent Memory’ is a meditation on impermanence and entropy. This kinetic series exists between painting and sculpture, employing a concealed heat source behind a thermochromic canvas to reveal temporal traces that emerge and dissolve. Painting with heat and sculpting with time, it embodies physical laws and mathematical patterns indifferent to human observation.
Brown holds an MArch with Distinction from The Bartlett School of Architecture, where he received the Bartlett Medal. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Show, the Saatchi Gallery, and the RWA. ‘Drawing Machine Framework I’ was recently selected as a finalist for the Arte Laguna Prize.
