Faye Browning

The Stone Giant

Faye is an illustrator/maker with a love of ancient places and the folklore that springs from them. She grew up in Penwith, Cornwall, a place soaked in stories. She works across many mediums, but her current focus is on creating transformation puppets that hold traces of stories in the movements of their paper joints.

The piece on show, ‘The Stone Giant’, is a paper giant that transforms from rock to giant. When we look at an isolated, rocky outcrop in the Cornish landscape, we can see how it could have inspired the stories of these creatures roaming the land, rearranging the world. In turn, the stories of giants give significance to that part of the land. The landscape breeds the story, and the story feeds the landscape, each sustaining the other.
