Nancy Murgatroyd

Nancy Murgatroyd | Ceramics | Devon

Nancy Murgatroyd turns thoughts into tactile, relatable, contemporary ceramics. She works in stoneware using the traditional sgraffito technique which she studied in her native North Devon.

Her work explores the natural interdependence which extends beyond individual physical boundaries. It is an interpretation of energy, ideas, feelings and dreams permeating our lives and surroundings. These whimsical inventions use shapes and patterns which have been universal for thousands of years. Stories told through images and words, free spirits reflected in the clay.

Following a thorough art and design education, Nancy has worked in textiles, fashion, painting, printmaking and ceramics and run a gallery selling Contemporary British Art & Craft. Her life in rural Devon is a major influence on her work. In her Hilltop studio she draws images into slips, underglazes and engobes applied to the surface of the handmade pieces. Each piece evolving from a lump of clay, is delicate and temperamental. Two high temperature firings later it is robust and ready for use. Using the products of the earth, this unsentimental, meditative process carves through time, to share thoughtful ideas in a joyful, questioning and approachable way.
