Katie Bunnell

Katie Bunnell | Ceramics | Cornwall

Katie has a longstanding love of ceramics in all its complex historical, contemporary, cross cultural and artfully decorative guises. This interest is referenced in recent work through playfully modelled scenes drawing on chinoiserie designs and staffordshire flatback figurines. The work explores historical and contemporary human perspectives on animals and landscape, as well as relationships between two dimensional mark making and three dimension form.

Drawing is fundamental to her practice and new works have sprung to life from ink and brush paintings based on traditional Chinese techniques for rendering trees, mountains, rocks, clouds, branches and flowers.

With an MA in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art and a PhD entitled The Integration of New Technology into Ceramic Designer-Maker Practice, Katie has presented her work in conferences and exhibitions worldwide. Until 2016 she was an Associate Professor at Falmouth University, where she established Autonomatic, an award winning research group exploring craft and digital technologies.

Katie's new work marks a return to a direct engagement with clay, her love of its versatility, and all the risk, frustration and delight it brings with it.

Working from her studio in Cornwall, she combines her practice with community projects and workshops.
