Abi Higgins

Abi Higgins | Ceramics | Devon

Abi’s studio is in a barn attached to the Mill house where she lives on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon.

Abi’s Raku pots are wheel thrown to create elegant bottles and round moon jars then decorated with copper wash and Raku fired. The copper wash reveals its colours during the final stage of the firing when the pot is transferred to a reduction bin. Beautiful colours and flashes appear on the pot’s surface. The necks and the rims of the bottles and moon jars have Terra Sigillata slip, from Roman times, applied to them and then polished giving a subtitle shine in contrast to the texture on the body. Abi likes the connection of ancient techniques still being used 2000 years later.

Abi mixes her own glazes and washes, and has built her own Raku kiln. Raku creates exciting results, for her as the maker and more importantly, the onlooker.

Abi has potted for about twenty years following a career as a dancer, then exercise teacher. She began with a weekly pottery course, progressing to a one day a week apprentice position in a professional pottery. In the main, she has taught herself through experiment and practice.
