My work plays along the fine line between form and function. I create pieces that are combinations of thrown and hand-built objects that when put together inform or tell part of a story.
I recently found myself at the architecture biennale looking at models of concrete towers and parking garages made out of card and kitchen installations containing various objects to accommodate food. I was particularly drawn to the various industrially manufactured metal cafeteria trays housed in the Korean pavilion. These reminded me of the TV Dinners of my youth and naturally connected my interest in food and cooking. Mixing all of these ingredients together with drawing inspired by Richard Diebenkorn’s cigar box painting has been my most recent focus.
All of my work evolves and is initially designed in the sketchbook, particularly in the understanding of overall form but it is the physical act of making, as well as the opportunity for serendipity that ultimately determines the final outcome.
The work is hand-thrown and slab-built using a stoneware body that I blend with oxides to achieve the concrete colour and ‘feel’ of the final work. The clay surface is drawn on using slips and underglazes before bisque firing and then glazed in a range of satin matt glazes that I have developed, emulating the industrial colours of my source material. the work is high fired to Cone 7 for durability, producing both food and dishwasher safe ware.
