‘Watery Landscapes’ - Reduction Printmaking

Workshop with Steve Manning

Friday 1 May 2026, 10.30am - 4.30pm

£75

Venue: MAKE Southwest

Suitable for: Adults

Level: Beginners

Join MAKE Southwest Maker Member, Steve Manning, to create a beautiful, watery landscape with reduction printmaking.

The reduction printmaking process, unlike multi-block printing, uses only one block of lino to produce a finished image. It can be a challenging discipline as the block is destroyed with each stage of the process. But with careful planning the end results can be very satisfying.

Suitable for entry-level printmakers or those with more experience wishing to understand the basics of reduction printmaking.

Aim:

This workshop aims to demystify reduction printing by enabling participants to create a simple image using a limited colour palette.

By the end of the workshop participants will have created one or more small estuary/seascape prints using the lino reduction printmaking process.

Learning outcomes:

Participants will understand how to:

  • use lino gouges

  • cut a design from a lino block

  • use the reduction printmaking process

  • to overlay inks

  • effectively roll ink onto a block

  • transfer an image to lino

  • register an image to paper using Ternes Burton registration method

  • apply the image to paper using hand burnishing

Method:

Using a selection of pre-designed templates and a restricted colour palette participants will transfer, cut and print an estuary/seascape from designs provided by the tutor.

Tutor will provide:

  • examples of reduction prints and visual aids illustrating the stages of the process

  • pre-designed estuary/seascapes for participants to transfer to lino

  • tools and materials

  • lino and paper for the production of one estuary/seascape print

  • additional lino and paper for a second estuary/seascape will be chargeable on the day.

All other tools and materials will be provided.
