Suminagashi Ink Marbling on Paper and Textiles

Workshop with ROCWORX

Friday 2 May 2025, 10.30am - 4pm

£75

Venue: MAKE Southwest

Suitable for: Adults

Level: All Abilities

Join MAKE Southwest Associate Maker Member, Rachel O’Connell to learn the beautiful craft of marbling!

Marbling is a mindful heritage craft, where we use simple tools and breathwork to create our patterns. Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese surface pattern, using inks on water to create organic shapes. Each pattern made is unique, much like a fingerprint.

You will be guided to create patterns to transfer onto paper and textiles, finishing the day by marbling a silk scarf and creating a Japanese stitch bound book using your patterned papers.

No previous experience of paper marbling is necessary.

All tools and materials will be provided.

Participants must be aged 18 years or older.

About ROCWORX

I am a multi-media marbling artist, a sustainable maker and an educator. I marble on textiles, including leather, paper and wood. I create home décor, lighting, stationery and wearable art. I tutor workshops and demonstrate in schools, galleries and museums throughout the UK. I am also a tutor at West Dean College.

Marbling is different to the marble stone, for which it is named for. Marbling is an ancient surface pattern craft, originating in Japan over a thousand years ago. The surface pattern is created from paint, or inks, being floated on water, with patterns made using simple tools and combs, before being transferred to paper or fabric. To read more about the history of this ancient endangered heritage craft, go to the Marbling page in the Information section.
