A Green Maker Initiative workshop
This workshop coincides with our captivating exhibition Kudzu: and other natural fibres in Japan, on show in our Riverside Gallery 12 September - 31 October.
Join us for a half-day circular weaving workshop and create your own coaster or brooch using a simple round weaving frame!
Circular weaving is a creative textile technique that involves weaving in a continuous spiral rather than the back-and-forth method used on traditional rectangular looms. Using our specially designed round frames, with warp threads arranged like bicycle spokes, you will learn how to build beautiful circular patterns and create a unique handmade piece.
The technique is easy to learn, relaxing, and enjoyable, making it suitable for both beginners and those with previous textile experience.
We will provide a wide selection of Japanese natural fibres and materials, including kudzu, ramie, hemp, vegetable-dyed cotton and silk threads, Japanese paper yarns, and sakiori (strips of repurposed fabric, traditionally silk or cotton). Through these materials, you will have the opportunity to explore the beauty, texture, and diversity of these ancient fibres while experimenting with colour and composition in your weaving.
Come and discover the rich traditions of Japanese textile materials and enjoy the creative process of circular weaving.
This workshop will be run by Suyoko Ito & Toyomi Harada of A Mano, visiting tutors from Japan.
