‘Linking It’ Chain Making

Workshop with Syann van Niftrik

Saturday 16 November 2024, 2pm - 5pm

£40

Venue: MAKE Southwest

Suitable for: Adults

Level: All Abilities

Join MAKE Southwest Maker Member, Syann van Niftrik to make a silver bracelet or necklace using linked silver elements with a simple hook clasp.

Beginning with a discussion of what is possible: techniques, skills, materials and time available. Once you have decided on your design, we will talk through how to proceed and practice any techniques you may not be familiar with. At the end of the day you will have a beautiful, unique bracelet or necklace, new skills and the confidence to explore further jewellery making techniques.

In my experience, hands-on making develops an understanding of the practical issues involved in developing ideas. The skills used in making chain, can be quickly mastered and can easily be adapted to exploit a wide range of creative endeavors.

On this short course, you will learn about the character of different metals, how to anneal wire, shape and cut links and soldering with sheet solder and paste. There are many ways in which a chain can be constructed which we will look at and you may want to research ideas before attending the workshop.

Please bring a notebook to make notes and sketch ideas. It is also advisable to wear comfortable clothes.

You will be given a list of tool and materials suppliers.

All materials except the silver used in your final piece, will be included in the ticket price. Completed Items, depending on weight, can cost between £22 and £50 at the most.

No previous experience is necessary.

Participants must be aged 18 years +.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included and will be available on the day. Our Café is also open should you wish to purchase other refreshments during the workshop - all participants receive a 10% discount voucher for food and drink purchased on the day.
