Public Call Out to Suggest 50 ‘Women of Cornwall’, Past and Present, to be Celebrated in a Major New Art Installation by Art Centre Penryn.

Women of Cornwall, an arts project founded by Art Centre Penryn, the major new contemporary art centre opening in Cornwall, in collaboration with ceramic artist Katie Bunnell, is calling for the public to suggest their own ‘Women of Cornwall’, highlighting and celebrating women who have made meaningful contributions to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Discovering women who have not yet been recognised is of key importance to the project with no achievement or impact too small for a woman to be suggested. The 50 women will be a snapshot of what we value now in the 21st century rather than a definitive group.

These women, past or present, myth or reality, will be honoured in a major art installation comprising 50 handmade porcelain plates, each individually rendered with a visual representation by contemporary artists. The plates will become a permanent collection at Art Centre Penryn and will also tour other venues to promote the incredible and varied contribution Cornish women have made throughout history.

The public have until 30 November 2024 to suggest a woman at https://www.artcentrepenryn.org/womenofcornwall

Women of Cornwall is looking for women who have contributed in a broad range of areas including: visual arts  •  sciences  •  engineering  •  literature •  environment  •   farming  •  fishing •  health  •  sport  •  social care  •  community & voluntary action  •  maritime  •  hospitality  •  education & learning  •  performing arts  •  business & enterprise  •  media & communications   •  inspirational leadership in any sector  •  politics  •  religion •

Their Cornishness might be fluid, but whatever these women have done their achievements should have a special connection with this unique area.
