An upcycling course for teenagers can be a fun and educational way to encourage creativity, sustainability, and environmental awareness.

Following on from our successful Young Green Maker Initiative (Young GMI) project, RE-MAKE, we are running a fun and practical 2-day workshop teaching teens sustainable textiles craft. Over the 2 days we will look at:

Introduction to Upcycling

  • What is upcycling?

  • Discuss the difference between recycling and upcycling.

  • Introduce examples of upcycled products in fashion, art, and home décor.

  • Highlight the importance of sustainable textiles choices.

  • Discuss environmental impacts of waste and the importance of reducing consumption.

Basic Techniques of Upcycling

  • Fabric & clothing upcycling.

  • Turning old clothes into something new (e.g., transforming a t-shirt into a tote bag).

  • Basic sewing and DIY fabric skills.

Creative Project

  • Teens will work on a larger project of their choice, incorporating techniques they’ve learned: examples: upcycled fashion items, home décor pieces, or even small functional furniture.

Sustainability & Future of Upcycling

  • Discuss career opportunities in sustainable design, fashion, or architecture.

  • Explore how upcycling can be applied to industries, such as fashion and product design.

Final Showcase

  • Teens present their upcycled creations to the group.

  • Teens come away from the workshop with something they have made themselves.

This structure ensures a balance of hands-on learning, creativity, and the importance of sustainability, while allowing teens to make unique items and feel proud of their creations!

This course is completely free, but does require application and selection, as there are only 6 spaces available.

Applications are now closed.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 10PM, SUNDAY 16 FEBRUARY

byAliceWood

Alice is a bag and accessories designer and maker, based in Plymouth.

She has two main collections of work. One using Italian veg tanned leather that is sustainably produced, using traditional low impact methods that don't use harmful chemicals. Alice creates a collection of simple and elegant bags and accessories in a wide variety of colours that are made to be used and loved.

Her second collection uses reclaimed, locally sourced, waste textiles, to make a broad range bags and accessories. All of the materials, are in limited amounts and this creates a collection that is constantly evolving as the materials change. Alice really enjoys working with the different qualities, colours and textures to design her new products.

This 2-day workshop is made possible with money generously donated by Locality Budget Funding, Devon County Council. Sewing machines provided by Janome and textiles to upcycle largely from Bogey Knights.
