This workshop coincides with our Jubilee Gallery exhibition: '20 Years in the Making' - a celebration of 20 years of the Craft Festival.
This is a unique opportunity to learn all about MAKE Southwest Maker Member, Sasha Wardell's approach to slip casting and decorating.
Sasha will talk and demonstrate the key parts of her ceramics practice with opportunity for participants to be guided through slip casting using small scale moulds.
Sasha has over 40 years’ experience in the world of bone china and porcelain, having studied in two centres of excellence; Stoke on Trent, United Kingdom and Limoges, France.
The workshop will cover the following:
Casting demonstration with a focus on colouring the slip
Opportunity to cast into ready-made cup / bowl moulds (a mould will be provided by Sasha, but participants are welcome to provide their own providing that thy are small in scale i.e cup / small bowl size.
Releasing from moulds and drying process
PowerPoint & presentation by Sasha on her work
Decorating demonstration - with focus on multi layered slicing and incising
Opportunity for participants to decorate their outcomes
An introduction to firing cycles (Please note: firing of outcomes made is not included as part of the workshop day or ticket price.)
This workshop is aimed at participants with some experience of ceramics or pottery.
On the Day
All tools and materials will be provided.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are included and will be available on the day. Our Café is also open should you wish to purchase other refreshments during the workshop - all participants receive a 10% discount voucher for food and drink purchased on the day.
On arrival, please make your way to the side gate of the Riverside Mill, through the courtyard and up the stone stairs on the side of the building. Please let us know if you require the lift.

About the Maker
Sasha has over 40 years experience in the world of bone china and porcelain having studied in two centres of excellence , namely Stoke on Trent and Limoges.
She has taken elements of this industry and adapted them to a studio environment with her own production which includes bespoke vases,bowls, lighting and tea ware. Sasha has concentrated on perfecting the craft-based skills which enhance the inherent qualities of bone china and her carefully produced distinctive work embraces and reflects contemporary taste and lifestyle.
Each piece is individually made using industrial processes that Sasha has personally developed.
Her work found early success in galleries and stores across the world from Liberty’s, Fortnum and Mason’s and the Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery in London to Barneys in Tokyo, The Habitat Centre in New Delhi; The Raglan Gallery in Sydney and The Object Space in Atlanta.
Alongside her own practice she has run workshops dedicated to bone china and mould making for many years in Belgium, Hungary, Australia, South Africa, Canada, India and Japan.
She continues to exhibit and sell worldwide and, after running residential mould making and bone china workshops in France for many years, she now runs them from her studio in Wiltshire.
Sasha’s hallmark style, a distinctive combination of pure white slip cast bone china, treated with unique decorating techniques and finished in a carefully chosen palette of muted, subtle colours, has made her work highly sought after by private collectors, museums and contemporary art galleries worldwide. These include CLAY, Museum of Ceramic Art, Denmark; The Grainer Collection , Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Charlotte, N. Carolina USA; The National Museum of Scotland , Edinburgh; Museo Nacional de Ceramica, Valencia, Spain; The National Craft Museum in Seoul, S.Korea and The Cube and cClay Museum, Rust-en-Vrede, S.Africa.
Commissions include a range of Ikebana vessels for the Takashimaya store, Osaka; a tea ware range for the Rare Tea company; a sculptural piece for the P&O ocean liner ‘Arcadia’ and a range of vessels for the Artisan and Craft range for the National Trust.
Awards have included the Grand Prix at 1st World Triennial of Small Ceramics, Zagreb; a diploma at 12th Biennial of Ceramic Art, Vallauris, France; shortlisted for Sydney Myer International
Ceramic Award, Shepparton, Australia and a ‘Crafted’ recipient with Walpole Luxury Brands, London.
